If you know what you're looking for and where to look, you can skip a lot of trial and error.
Kearny Mesa: The Default Answer for a Reason
Kearny Mesa didn't become San Diego's auto repair hub by accident. The zoning is commercial-industrial, the rents are (relatively) reasonable, and you're central to most of the county. If you live anywhere from Clairemont to North Park to Mission Valley, this is probably your closest concentration of options.
What you'll find here: everything. Transmission shops. Brake specialists. General repair. European imports. The quality range is wide — you'll see both ASE-certified master techs and fly-by-night operations in the same zip code. The key is looking for the shops that have been in the same spot for ten-plus years. Longevity in Kearny Mesa means they're doing something right, because the competition is fierce.
One thing worth knowing: if your car dies on the 163 or the 805 and you need it towed somewhere before you've picked a mechanic, ask the tow driver where they'd take their own car. A lot of the Central San Diego towing services that run this area regularly drop cars at the same handful of trustworthy shops, and they know which ones actually call customers back.
When you're vetting a Kearny Mesa shop, ask if they'll let you see the repair bay. The good ones don't care — they'll walk you back and show you the lift. If they hedge or say it's a "liability issue," keep looking.
Miramar and Convoy Street: Where the Import Specialists Are

El Cajon: Truck, Diesel, and Off-Road Country
El Cajon's auto repair scene reflects what people actually drive out there: trucks, older domestic SUVs, and vehicles that see dirt roads on the weekends. If you have a Silverado, a Ram 2500, or anything diesel, this is where you'll find mechanics who know the platform inside and out.
The skill set is different here. Diesel work requires different diagnostic tools and a different kind of troubleshooting. A mechanic who's great with a Prius might be completely lost on a 6.7L Cummins. El Cajon shops tend to have the heavy-duty lifts, the scan tools that can read diesel-specific codes, and the experience with the common failures on Ford and GM trucks from the last twenty years.
You'll also find more welding and fabrication capability in this area. If you need custom exhaust work, a lift kit installed properly, or frame repair, East County is where that expertise clusters. These shops tend to be less corporate, more independent, and more willing to work with you on labor rates if you're supplying your own parts.
The vetting process here is simpler: ask if they work on diesels regularly. If they say "we can do anything," they probably can't. The shops that specialize will tell you exactly which trucks they see most often.
Pacific Beach and the Beach-Town Mechanic
Pacific Beach has a specific car culture: older Tacomas, Subaru Outbacks with surfboard racks, and beater sedans held together by salt air and optimism. The mechanic shops that survive here understand that their customer base is younger, less wealthy, and more likely to ask "what's the minimum I need to do to pass smog?"
These shops tend to be more flexible about used parts, more willing to prioritize safety over perfection, and more realistic about what a 2003 4Runner with 210,000 miles actually needs. You're not going to get factory-spec repairs here, but you'll get honest assessments. A good beach-town mechanic will tell you when something can wait versus when it's actually dangerous.
The downside is availability. A lot of these shops are one or two-person operations, and they're booked out a week or more. If you need something done same-day, you're probably going back to Kearny Mesa.
How to Actually Vet a Mechanic (Beyond Google Reviews)
Google reviews are useful, but they're also gamed. Here's what actually matters:
Ask about diagnostic fees. Good shops charge for diagnostics separately from the repair, and they'll explain what they found even if you don't do the work. Shops that waive the diagnostic fee if you do the repair are incentivized to find problems.
Get a written estimate before any work starts. California law requires this for jobs over $100 anyway, but a good shop will do it automatically and break down parts versus labor.
Check if they're willing to show you the old parts. This is the simplest bullshit filter. If they replaced your brake pads, they should be able to show you the worn ones. If they say they "already threw them out," be skeptical.
